Hair Removal FAQ’s
Who are the best candidates for laser hair removal; how does the laser work?
The laser seeks out the pigment or color in the hair. It works by destroying the follicle making it so it can no longer produce new hairs. This non-invasive procedure does so without the use of needles or prods. Instead the light simply penetrates through the skin and is directed towards the hair follicle.
In order for laser hair removal to be effective you will need several sessions. At Premier Laser Spa of Albany, we’re the experts in comprehensive laser hair removal and have been doing so for many years in the Albany, NY region. The number of sessions you will need can vary from three to eight depending upon the area treated and the amount of hair to be removed. Individual session times will vary depending upon the area that will be treated; sessions range from under 30 seconds to over an hour. For example, the underarms will take approximately three minutes per session while a male’s back may take over an hour!
When lasers were first developed back in the 1990’s the technology was only worked well on people with lighter skin and darker hair. With recent developments we are now able to treat people of different hair colors and skin colors. When you come in for a consultation with one of our technicians they will take your physical attributes and match them to a laser that will work best for you.
How does laser hair removal differ from electrolysis and is it permanent?
The biggest difference between Laser Hair Removal and electrolysis is the fact that electrolysis is invasive; it involves the use of a tiny needle that is inserted through the skin and into each hair follicle. Laser Hair Removal involves the use of a laser light that simply pulses on the skin and penetrates through it.
Another major difference is the amount of time it takes to complete a session. With Laser Hair Removal you can complete a treatment in less than six months, with electrolysis you will need at least 18 months. In terms of the number of sessions needed with Laser Hair Removal the average client needs approximately five sessions; with electrolysis you will need a minimum of 15 sessions.
The FDA approved laser hair removal in 1998 for permanent hair reduction. Laser hair removal has approval for permanent hair reduction and not hair removal because the laser is unable to permanently remove all of your hair in a single secession. Hair grows in three different phases: the Anagen phase, Catagen phase, and the Telogen phase. At any given time your hair is in any one of these three phases. Laser hair removal is only effective in the Anagen stage and this is why multiple treatments are needed and the FDA has given laser hair removal approval for permanent hair reduction.
How does LaserFast™ hair removal differ from other laser systems?
LaserFast™ hair removal utilized the most advanced, safe, and reliable technology for hair removal. Candela lasers have been an industry gold standard in laser hair removal since laser hair removal was given FDA clearance in 1998. The GentleLASE® laser is an alexandrite laser with the biggest spot size in the industry allowing it to be able to effectively and quickly remove unwanted hair. Because of the lager spot size this laser allows the client to even get large areas done in half the time of other lasers. The Candela GentleLASE also offers clients a patented cooling device or cryogenic device that is computer coded to offer you more comfort than ever before.
Which areas can be treated?
With LaserFast™ hair removal we can treat almost any part of your body. For women the most common treatment areas include the face, under arms, bikini area and legs. For men the most common treatment areas include the chest, back, legs, and face.
What preparation is needed before laser treatment?
There are a few things you must know before you come in for your sessions. For one, do not wax or use tweezers on the area for six weeks before your first visit. Instead shave during the time period. This is because for the treatment to work the hair must be in the follicle at the time of the treatment. Also, on the day of your treatment shave the area that will be treated, this will help the laser identify the follicles easier.
What will I look like after the treatment?
During the treatment you may notice some of the hair falling out. This will continue to happen until the 21-day mark. Your appointments should be scheduled every four to six weeks depending on your individual characteristics and the area being treated. With the first treatment you will have at least a 20% reduction in hair.
Rarely, some people have reported a slight redness in the area that can be remedied the same day by applying an ice pack.
What should I avoid after treatment?
After the session you should avoid the sun for two weeks. During this time if you must be in the sun than use a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30. If you go out in the sun without sunscreen you are risking skin discoloration. You should also stay away from abrasive products, which can make your skin get inflamed.

Are there any adverse effects; Are there individuals who cannot be treated?
The FDA approved Laser Hair Removal in 1998. Laser Hair Removal is generally a safe procedure for most people. Prior to its approval the lasers went through over one thousand treatments to test its efficacy. When the treatment is administrated properly it is very rare to have side effects with Laser Hair Removal. Sometimes if you have exposed the area to the sun within a two-week period before or after your session you may see a skin color difference that is usually temporary. This skin change can be hypopigmentation or hyperpigmentation. With a few patients this skin discoloration may be permanent. This is why it is very important to avoid sun exposure during the four-week period – two weeks before and two weeks after your sessions.
Another rare side effect is redness in the area. To combat this you can apply a cold pack to the area for a short time. This redness will subside usually within a few hours or at most a day or so.
Most individuals can be treated with Laser Hair Removal. Individuals who are tanned should wait until the tan has faded to come in for Laser Hair Removal. Prior to your session do not use self-tanning lotions as this may cause skin discoloration.
Also if you have an open wound or cold sore in the area you should wait until after it is healed.
